At last! Apple launches a responsive website...well sort of

It was up there with the world’s great mysteries – why was Stonehenge built? what really happened at Area 51? and why did Fox TV cancel Firefly? ... Why didn’t Apple have a responsive website?

Well, whatever the hypotheses – and there were many (for instance here, here and here) the tech behemoth has taken the plunge and launched a responsive website. Or to be more accurate, added responsive pages to their website.

Not surprisingly, the shiny new pages announcing the launch of the shiny new iPhone 6 and Watch are responsive.

But drill deeper into the site and many of the existing pages don’t adapt to the device they are being viewed on. Take, for instance, the pages devoted to the Mac – they remain steadfastly non-responsive.

This partial roll out of responsive is somewhat of a disappointment but I guess that converting all their pages is a massive job. The good news is that they have done a great job of the pages that they have made responsive.

Our technical team have looked at the source code and are seriously impressed with the way that Apple has implemented the responsive element. Rather than base the rendering of the pages on screen size, the site’s code looks to see if the device has a cursor. If not, the code assumes that a touch screen is being used and re-renders the whole site with touch-sized buttons etc.

It’s great to see Apple finally adding responsive pages to its website. The new sections look amazing, as always, with Apple’s great use of white space and striking imagery. However, maintaining the older sections as non-responsive is a bit of a let-down.

Take a look at a couple of the responsive websites we’ve built;
